The Parliament in Kenya is to debate a new law against female genital mutilation, a practice that affects around 35 percent of women in Kenya. The bill was submitted to Parliament by Member of Parliament Fred Kapondi. It entails a prison sentence of three years for any person submitting a woman to FGM. This includes any person who assists in the submission of a victim to FGM for example by bringing a person from another country to Kenya for the procedure or by failing to report a case to the authorities.
Das Parlament in Kenia wird diese Woche über ein neues Verbot von weiblicher Genitalverstümmelung (FGM) debattieren. Etwa 35 Prozent der kenianischen Frauen sind Opfer von FGM. Der Gesetzesentwurf des Parlamentariers Fred Kapondi sieht eine Gefängnisstrafe von mindestens drei Jahren für die Durchführung einer Genitalverstümmelung vor. Auch Personen, die Beihilfe leisten, zum Beispiel in dem sie ein Mädchen aus dem Ausland nach Kenia bringen um die Verstümmelung durchführen zu lassen, sowie Personen, die eine Verstümmelung nicht melden machen sich nach dem neuen Gesetz strafbar.
