The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics reported yesterday that 75% of Egyptian FGM cases are performed by medical staff even it is illegal. As the prevalance rate of FGM is 91% in Egypt it seems to be a big business too.
The procedure was subsequenlty declared illegal in 2008, and doctors and nurses in Egypt have been banned from preforming procedures involving FGM since 2007. Penalties for engaging in the practice are between three months and two years in prison and in fines.
