FGM in the “western world” and the importance of taking a clear position / FGM in der “westlichen Welt” und die Wichtigkeit einer klaren Position

13 Jun

About two weeks ago I was informed about a policy statement by the Americal Academy of Pediatricians which suggested to perform “less harmful” types of FGM when demanded by a girl’s parent to prevent more harmful types being performed secretly. The statement caused outrage among human rights activists before it was finally withdrawn and I immediately published the following statement on the website of my foundation:

“Such a proposal is outrageous because it gives the impression that clitoral pricking is “harmless” and that a request to a doctor to mutilate one’s daughter is in fact a legitimate wish. I am relieved that the policy statement was withdrawn and hope that medical associations worldwide will take a firm stand against all forms of FGM”.

A very interesting question by a reader of this blog made me realise how important is is to repeat this message over and over again: a human rights abuse can never be excused by “tradition” or “religion”. FGM is cruel, has no purpose but the attempt to supress a woman’s sexuality and is ALWAYS a horrible crime against children.

WHEREVER YOU ARE IN THE WORLD, SPEAK UP AGAINST THIS CRIME.

    Waris,
I never knew about this crime until a few years ago. As soon as I heard of it, I felt assaulted for all the young girls who have to go through this trauma. It made me want to act. I joined V-Day and Equality Now immediately. I continue to cry out for each child that suffers this abuse. I love the women who protect and help to stop this horribly transgressive “tradition”.
I met Anderson Cooper once and requested he report on his CNN program about this unethical crime that continues in secrecy and has been brought into the US. I will always look for ways to solve this, educate people, and generate a wave of peaceful solution to treat our children, worldwide, with love, and not torture.
