African Union appoints Waris Dirie as Ambassador for Peace and Security in Africa / Afrikanische Union ernennt Waris Dirie zur Botschafterin für Frieden und Sicherheit in Afrika

Waris Dirie was appointed as Ambassador for Peace and Security  in Africa by the Chairman of the African Union, Jean Ping, within the context of the Peace & Security Summit of the African Union. 2010 is the year of peace and security in Africa, the 21st of September 2010 is the African Peaceday.

Waris Dirie: „I am very honored that my African brothers and sisters award me with this high position. But this position means a lot of responsibility. I am from an african country, Somalia, which is affected by a horrible civil war since 20 years and it cannot find peace. With my new position I want to help to bring peace to Somalia. I am already working on a project for this and I will present the project in September.

But there is another, much worse war in Africa. A war against women. The name of this war is „Female Genital Mutilation“ and it affects millions of girls every year. More than 150 million of women are traumatized by this absurd war and suffer their whole lifes from the consequences. Therefore, I demand that the African governments and all the people in Africa end this war. I want and I will contribute.

I felt the spirit of a new era in Africa at our first meeting in Addis Ababa on the 16th of July. Now we need to use this spirit that the wonderful african continent is able to develop beauty and strength.“

Waris Dirie wurde im Rahmen eines Peace & Security Gipfels der Afrikanischen Union  vom Vorsitzenden Jean Ping zur Botschafterin für Frieden und Sicherheit in Afrika ernannt. 2010 ist das Jahr für Frieden und Sicherheit in Afrika, der 21. September 2010 ist der Afrikanische Friedenstag.

Waris Dirie: „Ich fühle mich sehr geehrt, dass meine afrikanischen Brüder und Schwestern mich mit dieser Position auszeichnen. Diese Auszeichnung ist für mich aber auch eine große Verpflichtung. Ich komme aus einem afrikanischen Land, Somalia, das seit 20 Jahren vom schlimmsten Bürgerkrieg betroffen ist und das keine Ruhe findet. Ich will mit meiner neuen Position dazu beitragen, dass ein Friedensprozess in Somalia eingeleitet wird und arbeite bereits an einem Projekt dafür, das ich im September vorstellen werde.

Es gibt aber noch einen anderen, viel größeren Krieg in Afrika, und das ist ein Krieg gegen die Frauen Afrikas. Der Name dieses Krieges lautet „weibliche Genitalverstümmelung“ und jedes Jahr fallen ihm Millionen Mädchen zum Opfer. Mehr als 150 Millionen Frauen sind durch diesen sinnlosen Krieg traumatisiert und leiden ein Leben lang an den Folgen. Deshalb fordere ich von den afrikanischen Staaten und von allen Menschen in Afrika, diesen Krieg zu beenden. Meinen Beitrag dazu will und werde ich leisten.

Bei unserem ersten Treffen in Addis Abeba am 16. Juli habe ich gespürt, dass es eine Aufbruchsstimmung in Afrika gibt und die gilt es jetzt zu nutzen, damit sich dieser wunderschöne Kontinent endlich voll entfalten kann.“
