My dear friends,

first of all, I want to wish you all a merry Christmas and a very happy new year. I would like to use this chance to tell you about my hopes and dreams for 2011.

“In the course of the last sixty years, the international community has recognized the universal validity of women’s rights and has declared any form of gender discrimination to be unacceptable.” This sentence, describing the themes of this year’s Pio Manzu Conference, to which I was kindly invited, addresses one of the main achievements of the last century, but also one of the main challenges of the current one.

“Desert Flower is the true story of Waris Dirie, a young girl whose mother tried to force her to marry a much older man at the age of 13, so she ran away and managed to find a job in London as a maid in Somalia’s Embassy. When she was 18, a regime change forced her onto London’s streets and from there, as a cleaning lady in a London fast food restaurant, where she was discovered by a famous British fashion photographer and soon after became an international top model. But Waris Dirie did not rest on her laurels; instead, she used her fame to fight against the cultural traditions and poverty that forced her to run away from her home and family. She has created The Desert Flower Foundation, hoping to end the crime of FGM by raising public awareness, organizing events and educational programs, and supporting victims of FGM.

From the Somali desert to the world’s catwalks, Waris Dirie’s story is dramatized in the movie Desert Flower, a story which I hope will impel you to take action. The movie shows the incredible journey of a young girl’s nomadic life in the deserts of Somalia to a supermodel strutting on the world’s most famous catwalks. In New York, at the peak of Waris’ career, she is interviewed by a magazine editor who asks Waris to speak about the day that changed her life, fully expecting Waris to answer that it was the day she was discovered by the famous photographer in the fast food restaurant. But instead, Waris says the day that changed her life was the day she was five and had to suffer Female Genital Mutilation. This public acknowledgment is the beginning of Waris Dirie’s role as an activist. For the past twelve years, since that interview, Waris has spoken out about this archaic ritual, has founded The Desert Flower Foundation, and dedicates her life to fighting against FGM.

New law against FGM in Switzerland / Neues Gesetz gegen FGM in der Schweiz

Berne – The Swiss Parliament on Thursday voted in favour of a new law that will explicitly make female genital mutilation (FGM) a criminal offence in Switzerland. If found guilty, offenders of the law are facing up to 10 years in prison.

The most important difference to laws in other European countries is the possibility of prosecution even if the mutilation was performed abroad. Due to the countries of origin of the potential victims, this addition is extremely important in laws against FGM in Europe.

The new law is now awaiting approval from the Cantons. An estimated 7.000 girls and young women in Switzerland are at risk of becoming victims of female genital mutilation.

Bern – Das schweizer Parlament hat am Donnerstag mit 162 zu 2 Stimmen eine Gesetzesänderung beschlossen, die weibliche Genitalverstümmelung in der Schweiz explizit zu einer Straftat macht. Bei einer Verurteilung drohen dem Beschuldigten bis zu 10 Jahre Haft.

Der wichtigste Unterschied zu einer Behandlung von FGM als schwerer Körperverletzung, wie es beispielsweise in Deutschland derzeit behandelt wird, ist die Ergänzung einer möglichen Strafverfolgung auch dann, wenn die Verstümmelung im Ausland durchgeführt wird. Dies ist aufgrund der Herkunftsländer der potentiellen Opfer besonders wichtig.

Das neue Gesetz muss nun noch von den einzelnen Kantonen verabschiedet werden. Schätzungen zufolge sind etwa 7.000 junge Frauen in der Schweiz von weiblicher Genitalverstümmelung bedroht.

Desert Flower to be shown at the Athena Filmfestival in New York / Wüstenblume beim Athena Filmfestival in New York

All US readers of Desert Flower had to wait patiently for the movie to be released. Now with the US premiere announced for March, the movie will be shown at several filmfestivals, including the Athena Filmfestival, which takes place in New York from February 10th to February 13th 2011.

“The films we’ll screen exemplify our mission—to bring women’s unique and powerful voice to the forefront,” said Kathryn Kolbert, co-founder of the Festival and director of the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College.

“I am very happy that the movie is finally being released in the US as well”, says Waris Dirie. “FGM is an issue that affects hundreds of throusands of women in the US and I hope that the movie will make FGM an issue that is more openly discussed in America.”

I have an urgent request and hope that you might be able to help. A social worker from Berlin contacted me concerning a woman from Sierra Leone, who has lived in Germany for more than 20 years. Now her husband abandoned her and she and her four children (between 5 and 21 years old) are threatened to be deported to Sierra Leone. None of the children have ever lived there, but the father wants them to go back and have the three daughters mutilated. The family is currently staying with a friend, who has two children herself, in a 2-room apartment in Berlin. Thus, the most pressing issue at the moment is to find a place to stay for this family. German Translation: Dringender Aufruf von Waris Dirie

Ich habe eine dringende Bitte an alle Unterstützer und Aktivisten hier. Eine Sozialarbeiterin aus Berlin kontaktierte mich mit folgendem Fall: Eine Frau aus Sierra Leone, die seit 20 Jahren in Deutschland lebt, wurde von ihrem Mann verstoßen und ist nun von Abschiebung bedroht. Sie und ihre vier Kinder (zwischen 5 und 21 Jahren, davon 3 Mädchen) wollen unbedingt in Deutschland bleiben, aber der Vater besteht darauf, dass sie nach Sierra Leone ziehen und die Mädchen dort genital verstümmelt werden. Momentan ist die Familie bei einer Freundin (die selbst 2 Kinder hat) in einer zwei-Zimmer Wohnung in Berlin. Wir suchen nun nach jeder möglichen Hilfe, um eine Bleibe für die Familie zu finden.

New Facebook Group for Desert Flower Foundation activists against FGM / Neue Facebook Gruppe für Aktivisten gegen FGM

The Desert Flower Foundation, founded by Waris Dirie, is establishing a new Facebook group for people who want to become or are already actively involved in the fight against FGM.

“I want to make my organisation more open to the ideas of the many people out there who have the same dream as me: a world free from FGM and other forms of violence against women. Everyone who already contributes something to this fight, be it giving presentations at school or organising charity events, is welcome to join this group. If you have an idea, but are not quite sure how to put it into practice, this is the place to share it and ask the other members for advice. Waris Dirie Foundation changes its name to Desert Flower Foundation / Aus Waris Dirie Foundation wird Desert Flower Foundation

From December 2010, the Waris Dirie Foundation, founded by supermodel, author and human rights activist Waris Dirie in 2002, will be re-named “Desert Flower Foundation”. After eight years of developing and executing campaigns against female genital mutilation (FGM) worldwide, the organization is marking its relaunch in 2011 with a new name, based on Waris Dirie’s bestselling autobiographical novel “Desert Flower”.

“I felt it was time for a change”, says founder and President of the organization Waris Dirie. “The name Waris Dirie Foundation only supported many people’s perception that this is my personal fight backed by my personal organization. But the fight against FGM, a human rights violation and cruel crime against innocent children, is a fight we all have to fight together. By changing the name of my organization to “Desert Flower Foundation” I am hoping to invite even more people to join me in this fight.”

With its re-launch in January 2011, the Desert Flower Foundation is also introducing a new approach to the elimination of female genital mutilation and other forms of gender-based violence. While in the past, the focus has been on raising awareness and distributing information through presentations, interviews and campaigns, 2011 will see a more direct approach of the root problems that make FGM so difficult to eliminate: poverty, lack of social recognition of women and a lack of education and employment opportunities.

“Africa has a huge potential, and women are an extremely important part of this continents richness and potential. I am convinced that only through creating sustainable jobs for women in Africa can their social status improve and can these women eventually attain the freedom to decide what really is best for their daughters. I am convinced that if a woman has a sustainable job and a reliable income, and thus is not forced to sell her own daughters for money, FGM no longer offers any social of financial benefits and will eventually be eradicated for good. Africa has so many resources and so much knowledge and it is time we start investing in this wonderful continent.” – Waris Dirie

Während der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit der Desert Flower Foundation bisher auf Aufklärungsarbeit und der Verbreitung von Informationen zu FGM durch Präsentationen, Interviews und Kampagnen lag, werden 2011 eine Reihe von Projekten umgesetzt, die die Ursachen von FGM ansprechen: Armut, Mangel an sozialer Anerkennung von Frauen und mangelnde Bildung.

„Afrika hat ein riesiges Potenzial, und Frauen sind ein sehr wichtiger Teil des Reichtums und Potenzials dieses Kontinents. Solino Coffee from Ethiopia now available throughout Germany / Solino Kaffee aus Äthiopien gibt es jetzt überall in Deutschland

Earlier this year, we presented the Solino Project through a guest post by the head of the German company Frosta, Felix Ahlers . Now, Solino Coffee has become the first coffee roasted, ground and packaged entirely in Ethiopia to be available in Germany. We are very happy about this success and hope that the customers in Europe will honour this project, which creates qualified and sustainable jobs in Ethiopia. Solino coffee is available at retailer Karstadt Perfetto throughout Germany.

Bereits im Sommer hatten wir mit einem Gastbeitrag von Frosta-Chef Felix Ahlers über dessen Kaffeeprojekt in Äthiopien berichtet. Nun gibt es mit Solino Kaffee den ersten komplett in Äthiopien verarbeiteten und verpackten Kaffee überall in Deutschland bei Karstadt Perfetto zu kaufen! Wir gratulieren zu diesem tollen Erfolg und hoffen natürlich, dass dieses sinnvolle Modell, das in Äthiopien qualifizierte und nachhaltige Arbeitsplätze schafft, auch bei den europäischen Kunden gut ankommt.

Waris Dirie addresses FGM on Deutschlandfunk Radio / Waris Dirie spricht im Deutschlandfunk über FGM und Gewalt gegen Frauen

Since 1999, November 25th is the international day of the eliminiation of violence against women. Reporting on this important day for women’s rights, the German radio station “Deutschlandfunk” started its coverage with a quote from Waris Dirie:

“People do not take the issue of female genital mutilation seriously, although it is a very serious issue. I am disappointed. Disappointed by politicians, religious leaders and by the people who continue to practice FGM. Everything has to stay in secret, and thus people just do not take this as seriously as it really is.”

UN ministers met in Brussels on November 25th to present a paper on the elimination of violence against women. As Waris Dirie has pointed out repeatedly, violence against women, such as domestic violence, FGM, sexual violence, forced marriages etc., exists on all continents, including Europe. EU Commissioner of Justice Viviane Reding pointes out: “Violence against women is the most common form of violenceand it is a breach of human rights. It is unacceptable and we have to do something agains it”.

Seit 1999 ist der 25. November der internationale Tag zur Beseitigung von Gewalt gegen Frauen. Der Deutschlandfunk eröffnete seinen Beitrag zu diesem wichtigen Thema mit einem Zitat von Waris Dirie über weibliche Genitalverstümmelung (FGM):

“Die Menschen nehmen dieses Problem nicht ernst. Obwohl es eine sehr ernste Sache ist. Ich bin enttäuscht. Von den Politikern, von religiösen Obrigkeiten und von den Menschen, die so etwas machen. Alles muss geheim bleiben. ‘Pssst – schön unauffällig.’ Die Menschen nehmen dieses Problem einfach nicht so ernst wie es ist.”

Am 25. November präsentieren EU Ministerinnen und Staatssekretärinnen einen Erklärung zur Beseitigung von Gewalt gegen Frauen. Denn wie Waris Dirie immer wieder unterstreicht, gibt es Gewalt gegen Frauen wie häusliche Gewalt, FGM, sexuelle Gewalt, oder Zwangsverheiratung überall auf der Welt – auch in Europa.

EU Justizkommissarin Viviane Reding stellt klar: “Gewalt gegen Frauen ist die häufigste Form von Gewalt und verstößt gegen die Menschenrechte. Sie ist nicht akzeptabel. Und deshalb müssen wir etwas dagegen tun.”
