International Women’s Day: Waris Dirie attends high level EU Commission Round Table discussion in Brussels

Waris Dirie and the Desert Flower Foundation staff were invited by the Vice-President of the European Commission Viviane Reding and EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström to attend at a high-level roundtable discussion with EU PM´s and NGOs. In her keynote speech Waris Dirie demanded to set efficient action to abolish Female Genital Mutilation in Europe. She presented, as in 2006 during a special meeting with the Council of Ministers of the European Union, the Waris Dirie Manifesto and her demands to eradicate FGM in Europe.

Waris Dirie: I demand from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the member states serious action to stop this crime on innocent girls “I’m fighting since 17 years against Female Genital Mutilation. In 2006 I have presented my list of demands, which was appreciated by the EU and the Ministers. Now 7 years later we start the discussion all over again. I want finally that effective measures against this crime are set, by the European Union and its Member States we don´t need more conferences and discussions, we have to take serious actions, here you can read my manifesto and my demands.”

The EU promised to support Waris Dirie’s demands and the EU Commission announced to subsidize initiatives of the Member States with € 3.7 million and to pay additional € 11.4 million for NGOs working with victims.
