The couple of Gambian nationality faces a threat of 14 years in prison for practicing female genital mutilation on their two daughters, 6 and 11 years old. In July 2010, the girls were subjected to examination by social services and were found to be uncut. A few months later they underwent a new examination because social services were informed again and they found out that the girls have been mutilated.
The parents have denied in court to be responsible for mutilating the girls and said that the girls may have been mutilated in 2007 by their relatives during holidays in Gambia. But the court did not believe them as the girls were not cut in 2010. The father claimed that he is “against” the practice and has stated that his daughters should have a surgery to reconstruct their clitoris. But he could not explain how they could be mutilated without their knowledge.
The federal prosecutor demanded 7 years for each girl in prison.
