Conference on women in Africa / Konferenz zur Situation der Frauen in Afrika

On October 8th and 9th, women from all over Africa discussed issues affecting women in Africa at a conference on “Women and the Transformation of the African Continent” held in Johannesburg by the Pan African Parliament, a body of the African Union.

Among the topics addressed were issues such as the continuously high maternal and child mortality rates in Africa and female genital mutilation.

Reducing maternal mortality is one of the Millennium Development Goals, but most African states are still well behind target. “Some governments have created policies to deal with this matter. Policies are great but if no funding is allocated they will be pointless”, said Vicki Okine from the Fairplay for Africa Campaign that fights for fair access to health care.

The parliamentarians at the Pan African Parliament reconfirmed their commitment to ending the practice of FGM throughout Africa. The Deputy speaker of the Ugandan Parliament Rebecca Kadaga spoke about measures taken against FGM in Uganda. The strict laws concerning this practice in place in Uganda were applauded by the participants.

Other topics discussed during the conference were poverty, human trafficking, HIV and poor education. You can find more on this event as well as on the Pan African Parliament here.

Am 8. und 9. Oktober fand in Johannesburg / Südafrika eine Konferenz des Pan African Parliament, einer Institution der Afrikanischen Union statt. Unter dem Titel „Frauen und die Transformation Afrikas“ diskutierten Frauen aus ganz Afrika über Themen wie die hohe Kinder- und Müttersterblichkeit in Afrika und weibliche Genitalverstümmelung.

Die Reduzierung der Muttersterblichkeit ist eines der Millennium Development Goals, die bis 2015 erreicht werden sollen, allerdings hat sich an der schlechten Situation für Mütter und werdende Mütter in Afrika noch nicht viel geändert. „Einige Regierungen haben Maßnahmen beschlossen um die hohe Müttersterblichkeit zu reduzieren. Maßnahmen sind großartig, aber wenn es keine Ressourcen gibt um sie umzusetzen werden sie sinnlos“, sagte Vicki Okine von der Organisation Fair Play for Africa, die sich für fairen Zugang zu medizinischer Versorgung in Afrika einsetzt.

Die Parlamentarier bekräftigten ihr Bestreben, weibliche Genitalverstümmelung in Afrika zu beenden. Die Sprecherin des ugandischen Parlaments, Rebecca Kadaga, sprach über die Maßnahmen und Gesetze, die Uganda gegen weibliche Genitalverstümmelung erlassen hat. Die strengen Verbote und hohen Strafen in Uganda wurden von den Teilnehmerinnen sehr begrüßt.
