Before the end of the year, the many readers of Desert Flower and Waris Dirie fans in Japan will get the chance to see the movie adaptation of Desert Flower in cinemas across Japan. You can already see the Japanese trailer here.
Noch vor Ende des Jahres werden nun auch die vielen japanischen Waris Dirie und Wüstenblume Fans die Möglichkeit bekommen, die Verfilmung des Buches im Kino zu sehen. Den japanischen Trailer gibt es bereits jetzt hier.
The US distributor National Geographic Cinema Ventures has acquired the rights to the movie “Desert Flower“. Lisa Truitt, president of National Geographic Cinema Ventures:
“We are very excited to release Desert Flower. We want to present compelling stories about the world in which we live, and the saga of this beautiful woman, Waris Dirie, and her amazing ability to triumph over adversity is an inspiration for audiences everywhere.”
The movie was first released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in 2009 and has since been released in France, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Brazil, Australia, Ethiopia and South Korea, among others.
National Geographic organises a screening of the movie, which is due to be released in the US in early 2011, on September 30th 2010 in Washington DC. More details here.
Der amerikanische Filmverleih National Geographic Cinema Ventures hat die Rechte an dem Film „Wüstenblume“ für den amerikanischen Markt erworben.
„Wir freuen uns sehr, Wüstenblume in die amerikanischen Kinos zu bringen. Wir möchten mistreißende Geschichten über die Welt in der wir leben präsentieren, und die Geschichte dieser wunderschönen Frau, Waris Dirie, und ihre Fähigkeit sich gegen alle Widerstände durchzusetzen ist eine Inspiration für Zuschauer überall auf der Welt“, sagt Lisa Truitt, Präsidentin des Filmverleihs.
Der Film „Wüstenblume“ ist Ende 2009 in die deutschen, österreichischen und schweizerischen Kinos gekommen und seitdem in zahlreichen weiteren Ländern erschienen, darunter Frankreich, Spanien, die Niederlande, Belgien, Dänemark, Finnland, Polen, die Tschechische Republik, Brasilien, Australien, Äthiopien und Südkorea.
In den USA wird „Wüstenblume“ voraussichtlich Anfang 2011 erscheinen. Zuvor organisiert National Geographic am 30. September 2010 ein Screening in Washington, mehr Informationen dazu hier.

Ratet mal, was ich eben in den Händen hielt. Eine weitere Sprachversion der Filmausgabe von Wüstenblume: “Aavikon Kukka”. Wenn ihr euch jetzt fragt, was das wohl für eine Sprache ist, seid ihr nicht allein. Aber nach ein paar Minuten kam auch ich drauf: es ist Finnisch.

A week ago, the movie Desert Flower based on Waris Dirie’s bestselling autobiographic novel celebrated its premiere during the International Filmfestival in Addis Ababa.
The movie was received very well by the Ethiopian audience (and, in addition to its success in the cinemas, it is also a bestseller on the black market, as Waris reported here.)
The movie has sparked a public debate in Ethiopia, were FGM has been outlawed in 2004 but is still practiced by many tribes and surveys say that up to 74 percent of girls and women are victims of female genital mutilation.
Radio Campaign
A group that is especially difficult to reach are nomads such as the Afar. Due to the regular relocation, attending a school is almost impossible for the nomad children, and school dropouts in the region are high. However, a new approach seems to be taking effect in this remote area of Ethiopia: short radio spots are being broadcasted, educating parents about the dangers of FGM. According to the head mistress of the school in Hamed Ela, these spots are slowly taking an effect. While 100 percent of the girls in the Hamed Ela school are circumcised, the numbers among the younger girls starting school have begun to decrease.
Waris Dirie discusses with Students: “I love my mother, my family, and I love Africa”
Following the premiere of Desert Flower, Waris Dirie gave a lecture at the University of Addis Ababa, followed by a discussion with Ethiopian students. During the panel discussion, Waris was joined by state minister Nesanet Asfaw, Irish film maker Charlotte Metcalf and Olubukola Arowobusove from African Capacity Building as well as representatives from the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association.
The participants and students engaged in a lively discussion of possible ways of eradicating FGM through legal means of fighting FGM. Students addressed the roles of men and women in the perpetuation of the practice as well as in society in general, and discussed the possibilities of fighting FGM through education.
Waris Dirie’s personal account were an important part of the discussion, and all attendants were especially impressed and stunned by her ability to fight against FGM while at the same time expressing her love and forgiveness for her mother, who many would deem responsible for her suffering.

Vor einer Woche feierte der Film Wüstenblume, welcher auf Waris Diries autobiographischen Roman basiert, in Addis Abeba im Rahmen des internationalen Filmfestivals seine offizielle Afrika Premiere.
Der Film wurde vom äthiopischen Publikum sehr gut angenommen, und ist zusätzlich zu seinem Erfolg in den Kinos auch ein Verkaufshit auf dem Schwarzmarkt, wie Waris selbst hier berichtete.
Der Film hat in Äthiopien eine öffentliche Debatte über weibliche Genitalverstümmelung ausgelöst, die zwar seit 2004 offiziell verboten ist, in vielen Regionen jedoch weiterhin durchgeführt wird. Studien des Gesundheitsministeriums zufolge sind bis zu 74 Prozent der Mädchen und Frauen in Äthiopien von FGM betroffen.

Eine Gruppe die mit konventionellen Aufklärungskampagnen besonders schwer zu erreichen ist sind Nomaden. Durch die häufigen Umzüge ist es zudem für die Kinder von Nomadenfamilien kaum möglich eine Schule zu besuchen, geschweige denn abzuschließen. Ein neuer Ansatz zeigt in den Nomadengebieten Äthiopiens jedoch eine positive Wirkung: bereits seit einigen Jahren werden Informationskampagnen zu den Gefahren von FGM per Radio ausgestrahlt und erreichen so auch abgelegene Gegenden. Laut der Schulleiterin einer Schule in Hamed Ela geht die Zahl der von FGM betroffenen Mädchen, die bei den älteren Schülerinnen noch bei 100 Prozent liegt, unter den jüngeren Mädchen zurück.
Waris Dirie diskutiert mit äthiopischen Studenten: „Ich liebe meine Mutter, meine Familie, und ich liebe Afrika“
Am Tag nach der Filmpremiere besuchte Waris Dirie die Universität von Addis Abeba. Nach einer Rede zu den Studenten nahm sie an einer Diskussionsrunde mit Staatsministerin Nesanet Asfaw, der irischen Filmemacherin Charlotte Metcalf, Olubukola Arowobusove von Africa Capacity Building und Mitgliedern der Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association teil.
Die Diskussionsteilnehmer und Studenten diskutierten im Anschluss lebhaft über Möglichkeiten, FGM zu bekämpfen. Es wurden rechtliche Möglichkeiten zur Bekämpfung von FGM diskutiert, die Rolle von Männern und Frauen in der äthiopischen Gesellschaft und speziell im Weiterbestehen von FGM, sowie die Wichtigkeit von Bildung.
Waris Diries persönliche Schilderungen bereicherten die Diskussion und beeindruckten Teilnehmer wie Studenten. Besonders ihre Fähigkeit, die Grausamkeit von FGM zu beschreiben und mit aller Kraft zu Bekämpfen und gleichzeitig ihre Liebe und Vergebung für ihre Mutter auszudrücken, hinterließ bei allen Anwesenden einen tiefen Eindruck.

Tuesday night, all of Addis celebrated Waris Dirie: as a part of the Addis Ababa International Film Festival, which started on Monday, the movie “Desert Flower” celebrated its official Africa premiere.
The audience honoured Waris Dirie with standing ovations after the movie.
“I am so happy to be able to finally show the movie to an African audience”, Waris Dirie said during the event. “It is so important that this movie is shown here!”
Am Dienstag abend feierte ganz Addis Waris Dirie: im Rahmen des Addis Film Festivals, das am Monatg eröffnet wurde, feierte der Film “Wüstenblume” seine offizielle Afrikapremiere.
Waris Dirie wurde von begeisterten Publikum mit Standing Ovations gefeiert.
“Ich bin sehr froh den Film endlich dem afrikanischen Publikum zeigen zu können!” sagte Waris Dirie bei der Veranstaltung. “Es ist so wichtig, dass der Film hier gezeigt wird.”
